Faith in The Arts- Sikh Heritage Project: Ownership, Access and Conservation

Following the success of the first session in the Faith and The Arts Programme and the overwhelmingly positive feedback from attendees, we are delighted to invite you to the second session, which will be exploring the Sikh Heritage Project: Ownership, Access and Conservation on Thursday 31st July 2025, 2PM – 4PM at the John Rylands Research Institute and Library, 150 Deansgate, Manchester, M3 3EH.

This session will delve into the important and often complex questions surrounding the preservation of Sikh sacred texts. With a focus on cultural and religious sensitivity, the discussion will explore how conservators and curators navigate the fine line between accessibility and reverence.

Key topics will include:

  • The respectful conservation of sacred Sikh manuscripts
  • Ethical considerations in determining who can access or study these texts
  • The practical techniques used to protect and preserve these invaluable cultural artefacts

Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from a panel of distinguished experts, including Mark Furness, Maisie Proctor, Owen Mills, and Gurtek Singh. Together, they will offer diverse insights into the challenges and responsibilities of conserving religious heritage.

This event is part of the wider Faith in The Arts Programme, which brings together a wide range of experts and community members to explore the intersections between faith and archives.
